1. Each group will post, in the comments below, an analysis about your character(s)
2. You should describe the physical characteristics, temperament, social standing, important relationships, and, moral character from Act I.
3. Include at least three direct quotes and explain each quote's significance in understanding the character.. Note that the quotes may or may not be from the character but from another character who is either speaking to her/him or about her/him.
4. All members of your group are responsible for the accuracy and thoroughness of the character analysis, so I encourage all students to add, amend, and engage in the conversations we begin on this blog for Act I.
5. Since we have studied the Puritan beliefs and culture, you should include comments about your character within that cultural context, for example, how the Puritan tenets have worked for the later generations of Puritans and, is the theocratic government working to improve the social fabric of their lives, or not..

"He is a sinner, a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time, but against his own vision of decent conduct." (pg 20)
Great quotes Sabrina---what do they mean? Why are they important to know for understanding the character?
DeleteThe quotes given above for Abigail are importnat because those quotes are quotes that prove that Abigail Williams never confesses and that she lies. The quotes for John Proctor are importnat because it shows what kind of a person he is. The quotes given about Proctor makes the reader understand that he is a sinner and that he is feared but respected in Salem.
DeleteGreat start Jenny, you or one of your group members might want to check on the accuracy of the Proctor quote.

ReplyDeleteReverend Hale
-Specialist in witchcraft
-Believed he has a connection with the devil
-Feels he is allied with the best minds in Europe
-Obsessed with learning about the devil
-Powerful within the town because he owns books other than the Bible and he is allowed them.
-"Mr. Hale is nearing forty, a tight-skinned, eager-eyed intellectual."
FYI; I think you guys are group 5, Rev Hale
Delete"The Devil is precise...believe me if I should find no bruise of hell upon her" (38).
DeleteAnother great start Katie. I really liked to hear that you thought Hale was "obsessed with learning about the devil", and especially that everyone thought he knew everything about the devil because he owned "books other than the bible because he is allowed".

Abigail Jacobs
-Reverend Parrs's niece
-Servant for the Proctor Family
-Currently having an affair with John Proctor
-Seventeen years old
-An orphan which can explain her evil and moral deviations
- Capable of creating chaos and problems
- Very manipulative, demanding and threatening
-Can be be very violent, abusive, and rude
- A very discreet liar
-Does not like Goody Proctor at all, she defines her as a "lying, cold, sniveling woman" and that she only wants a slave.
-Drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife
- On the verge or having a spoiled reputation in town due to all the rumors about witchcraft.
-Danced naked in the woods with Betty and Marry.
1.) "He is bending to kneel again when his niece, Abigail Williams, seventeen, enters-a strikingly beautiful girl, an orphan, with an endless capacity for dissembling. Now she is all worry and apprehension and propriety." (Page 8)
-By the means of this quote, we are able to understand a few things about Abigail. Since she is an orphan, that can help explain some possible suggestions to why she is rude and morally deviating. The quote also says that she has an "endless capacity for dissembling" which means she is capable of breaking things apart and creating chaos.
2.) "You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!" "Abigail, smashed her across the face: Shut it! Now shut it!" (Page 18)
-In this quote, Betty is claiming that Abigail drank a charm to kill Good Proctor then Abigail abuses her and slaps her in the face. By what happened in this scenario, it is clear that Abigail is an abusive and threatening girl.
Reverend Parris
-Minister of Salem's church
-Striving for power, success, and leadership in the town
-Often very selfish, although he does not seem like it at first
-Not in very good terms with John Proctor (dislikes him)
-Very cautious and protective over his position as the minister of Salem
- Seeks to protect his reputation in town
-Very aware of all the rumors spreading about Abigail
1.) "Now then, in the midst of such disruption, my own household is discovered to be the very center of some obscene practice. Abominations are done in the forest-" (Page 10)
-Reverend Parris is a little furious and worried that his house is the center of all the witchcraft rumors going on around town. He is clearly very worried over this because he fears that this may destroy his position and reputation as the minister. He does not want any rumors or any gossip to demolish his core reputation. The only thing he seems to care about is himself and his position as the minister.
also Reverend Paris does not like kids and he has influence over the towns people
DeleteParris not only doesn't like children, he seems fairly afraid of his own parishioners....
DeleteAlso Reverend Parris is extremely paranoid that Betty's incident will hurt his reputation and position as minister of Salem
DeleteYes Hien, Parris is extremely paranoid of his reputation
DeleteKarIssa, you've followed the directions for your characters, now let's hope your group can add to your post.

ReplyDeleteRebecca Nurse:
-mid of John Proctor
-wife of Francis Nurse, an unofficial arbitrate
-had a land war with the Putnams, which illustrates her "other side"
-does not believe she deserves to be accused of witchcraft for her saint-like behavior
"In addition, certain families allied to the Nurses by blood or friendship and whose farms were contiguous with the Nurse farm or close to it, combined to break away from the Salem town authority and set up Topsfield, a new and independent entity whose existence was resented by old Salemites."
Giles Corey:
-83 years old
-strong, muscular man and still functioning despite his old age
-very inquiring and nosey
"I've changed my opinion of this man, John. Mr. Parris, I beg your pardon. I never thought you had so much iron in you."
Ok Sal, your post is a little confusing, probably because of typos---be sure to check them, before posting. Also I don't see where your quotes support your understanding of the characters. You need to explain---you or your group members can do this
ReplyDeleteRebecca Nurse quotes:
ReplyDelete"If so he is, then let us go to God for the cause of it. There is a prodigious danger in the seeking of loose spirits. I fear it, I fear it. Let us rather blame ourselves and-" (pg. 28)
"I think she'll wake in time. Pray calm yourselves. I have eleven children, and I am twenty-six times a grandma, and I have seen them all through their silly seasons, and when it come on them they will run the Devil bowlegged keeping up with their mischief. I think she'll wake when she tires of it. A child's spirit is like a child, you can never catch it by running after it; you must stand still, and, for love, it will soon itself come back." (pg.29)
Giles quotes:
"Mr. Hale, I have always wanted to ask a learned man- what signifies the readin' of strange books?" (pg. 40)
"It discomfits me! Last night-mark this-I tried and tried and could not say my prayers. And then she close her books and walks out of the house and suddenly-mark this-I could pray again!" (pg. 40)
"He didn't give a hoot for public opinion, and only in his last years-after he had married Martha-did he bother much with the church." (pg. 40)
